Richard C. Hartnack

U.S. Bancorp
Hartnack is Vice Chairman and head of consumer and small business banking at U.S. Bancorp, the country’s sixth largest commercial bank. He is responsible for more than 2500 branch offices and almost 30,000 people delivering service to more than 8 million clients.
Hartnack joined U.S. Bancorp in April 2005 from Union Bank of California, where he had served as Vice Chairman, director and head of the community banking group since 1991. Prior to that, he ran community banking as Executive Vice President at First Chicago and was in charge of corporate banking at First Interstate Bank of Oregon, where he began his banking career in 1971.
A native of Los Angeles, Hartnack earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from UCLA and a master’s degree in business administration from Stanford University. He also is a graduate of the Strategic Marketing Management program at the Harvard Business School.
Hartnack served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1967 to 1971, attained the rank of Captain, and flew 220 combat missions aboard the F-4B Phantom II in Southeast Asia. He received 14 Air Medals and the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat ‘V’.
Active in industry and community affairs, he is a past director of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, past director of MasterCard, Inc., past chairman of the California Banker’s Association, past vice chairman of the California Chamber of Commerce, past chairman of the Bank Administration Institute, past chairman of the Los Angeles Urban League and currently a director of Operation Hope. Additionally he is a member of the California Club, the Minneapolis Club and the Economic Club of Chicago.
